Research Consulting

In my 18 years as an academic, I have built a highly successful program of research at the intersection of bioethics and organisational/professional ethics. Of particular note, I have:

  • Received over $5 million funding—including from the most competitive sources (National Health & Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council and Medical Research Future Fund) where success rates are typically less than 20%

  • Published over 200 academic articles, book chapters and an edited collection—including being named in The Australian as Australia’s most cited bioethicist in 2020.

I have high level skills in:

  1. Designing and planning research projects

  2. Conducting literature reviews

  3. Writing research grant applications

  4. Obtaining ethics approvals

  5. Conducting qualitative research (including stakeholder interviews, focus groups and policy consensus building methods)

  6. Leading and managing large, multidisciplinary teams of researchers and collaborators

  7. Engaging with stakeholders and end users of research

  8. Disseminating research outputs to academic and non-academic audiences.

In addition to conducting my own research, I have helped numerous other individuals and organisations with research-related tasks including:

  • Planning and writing grant applications | University of Sydney, Flinders University, UTS (via WriteMedia Network)

  • Conducting and synthesising research | University of New South Wales, Cochrane, Endocrine Society of Australia

  • Writing academic articles | Agency for Clinical Innovation (via WriteMedia Network), University of Sydney, Australian Ethical Health Alliance.

I am actively involved in research-related committee and advisory work, including:

  • Being a member for eight years and Deputy Chair for five years of the research ethics committee of Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR). I am currently a member of the Steering Committee of Harvard Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center and Brain Cancer Biobanking Australia

  • Being Invited to contribute to major research reports e.g. a report on “The Future of Precision Medicine in Australia” commissioned by behalf of the Commonwealth Science Council, and a framework on big data commissioned by the Singapore National Medical Research Council

  • Being a Senior Associate of Praxis Australia, a not-for-profit research training organisation, for whom I have developed curricula and delivered invited talks on research ethics

  • Contributing to a review of the University of New South Wales’s Academic Health Science Centres

  • Advising organisations on the management of research ethics issues.
