About me
Professional Background
I am a medically-qualified bioethicist and social researcher with an international reputation for research into the role of ethics and values in bioscientific and healthcare organisations. I have a deep understanding of the practical challenges facing frontline health professionals, researchers, educators, regulators, health service managers and policymakers. I have particularly strong content expertise in organisational ethics and in the ethics and politics of biomedical research and innovation.
In addition to being a successful academic bioethicist, I am a freelance:
To support these roles, I have developed an online tool—iCON—that can be used to guide individuals and organisations in the identification, appraisal and management of conflicts of interest.
My clients include academics, government, industry and non-government organisations.
Approach and Strengths
As an academic, I have honed my skills in analysing data, synthesising complex information from disparate sources, constructing compelling arguments, communicating ideas and generating practical recommendations for policy and practice. My combined background in medicine and ethics gives me the capacity to work with both "facts" (the technical) and "values" (the social) and integrate all relevant considerations into research, writing and strategic advice.
I am a quick learner with a logical and creative mind. I am productive even when pulled in different directions, organised and trustworthy, and able to achieve the right balance between rigour and meeting deadlines.
I have excellent relationships with colleagues and clients. I work with clients to quickly identify their needs and develop a unique and tailored approach. Depending on the client's preference, I can act as a mentor and sounding board, co-designing and co-producing the work, or I can work more independently.
My academic credentials and success lend credibility to everything I do, and make it possible for me to engage with diverse stakeholders across organisational, professional, sectoral and geographical boundaries
In keeping with my long history in medicine and ethics, I prioritise roles in which I make a contribution to health and wellbeing.
